I am so excited, we finally bought a place in the country so I can have horses in my backyard!!! I have been waiting a long time for this. We actually got the place a couple months ago so I have been busy planning the layout for horses, as the person who owned it right before us did not have horses so he took out all the fence…yes I said ALL THE FENCE!!! So… we now have to at least re-fence part of it or a pen type area to put one or two horses.
I have been going back and forth on the layout and decided for now we will just do a smaller pen about 60 feet wide by 70 feet long. In this pen will be a lean to that was left by a previous owner as well as an automatic horse waterer (we still need to see if it works). My decision to make the pen this size was so that it would be big enough to lunge in (lunge line is 23ft long so double that and you get 46ft…so needed to be at least that wide. I also wanted it big enough to ride a little in if I end up with a hotter horse that I am not comfortable riding out in the open because keep in mind the outer border is not fenced at all.
I was debating between wire fence verses wood, since wood prices are so ridiculous right now, however, I am now leaning towards wood if I can get it done reasonably because that would be better for riding and lunging. If we have to we thought we could save some money by just having the posts put in and putting up the wood boards ourselves. Just waiting on quotes to come back.
I’ll keep you posted on what I ended up going with and if or what I would do different regarding size of pen and fencing materials and what ended up working well for the horses…oh and pics.
